Who Are You When No One Is Looking?
A lesson in how character quietly builds reputation.
Character isn’t built in the spotlight - it’s proven in the quiet moments.
Many years ago, after my wife gave birth to one of our boys, I applied for two weeks of vacation so I could give her and our newborn my full attention before returning to work.
My manager approved. My Director rejected it.
Well, not directly. Late that afternoon, my Director called me into his office for a quick chat. He was calm, direct, and polite.
“Dapo, I saw your vacation request, but I want you to know that I’m going to reject it.”
I couldn’t hide my shock and confusion. It was my right to take that leave. Moreso, I had explained why I needed it.
Then he continued:
“I see how hard you work, the sacrifices you make to deliver, and how much you support your team. I notice the quality of your work, the late nights, and the way you go the extra mile. At my level, there are a few unofficial privileges we’re allowed to use at our discretion, and I want to use one of them to support you and your family in recognition of the value you bring to this team.”
To cut the long story short, he truly did reject my vacation request but asked me to take the two weeks off without using my leave days. He promised to make sure HR paid me in full while I was away. And I was paid.
I left his office that day grateful, seen, and deeply encouraged - but also surprised. For me, every late night, every extra effort, every bit of support I offered my colleagues wasn’t about being noticed; it was simply about doing what I believed was right even when I obviously went beyond the standard expectations of my job. I had no idea anyone was paying attention.
And yet, that day, my unseen efforts spoke for me.
Such is life.
Character builds the kind of reputation you don’t have to advertise.
